Redmen Accomplish First Half Of Plan
The Brooklin Redmen went in to tonight’s game tied with the Brampton Excelsiors for second overall earning one of the team’s a first round bye, a pair of wins over the Ajax Rock this week would lock up second for the Redmen as Peterborough has clinched first. The first part of the plan was realized as the Redmen handed the Rock a decisive 17-6 loss to take second place alone for now.
The opening frame started off slow as the Rock scored a short-handed marker and it was 3-2 for Brooklin after one. This game was reminding fans of the last time these teams met when Ajax won 8-7.
The Redmen had to find the back of the net behind starter Tyler Carlson. They made that happen with a vengeance in the middle frame as they outscored the visitors 9-2 to take a commanding 12-4 lead to the second intermission. Bench boss Wayne Colley called a time out in the dying seconds of the second that paid dividends with Matt Holman scoring with five ticks on the clock.
Holman wasn’t done there; he won the opening face off in the third and with seven seconds off the clock scored again for two goals over twelve seconds, over two periods. The Redmen won that frame 5-2 for the 17-6 final.
Jason Wiswell and Bill Fox were relatively busy calling goals and penalties. The Redmen had seven minors over the first two periods compared to five minors in forty minutes to the Rock. The third period was penalty filled as Caleb Wiles and Ian Harloff went at in a tussle that earned Harloff a game misconduct for instigator. Not to be outdone by his teammate, Kyle Termini went after a Redmen player with less than a minute to go, he was given five for high sticking, five for slashing that gave him an automatic game misconduct for having two majors in one game and a game misconduct for being the instigator. Each team scored one goal shorthanded.
Aaron Bold played the entire game for the Redmen, the Rock played a pair of Tyler’s in net, Carlson started and was chased at 10:18 of the third in favour of McKendrick.
The Redmen are at the ACC for their final regular season game on Friday at 8:00 pm versus the Rock.
Redmen fans will be scoreboard watching as Brampton plays Peterborough on Thursday night.
